Coal prices have been trading around $66 per tonne in March, close to a level not seen since August as the effects of the coronavirus outbreak in China clouded further the outlook for coal demand. After reaching a peak of $116 per tonne in July 2018, coal prices have lost more than 40 percent, trading below $75 since August 2019 as more and more countries try to move to more environmental friendly energy generation. Note: Prices are free-on-board (F.O.B.) rail/barge prices, which are the F.O.B. prices of coal at the point of first sale, excluding freight or shipping and insurance costs. For 1949–2000, prices are for open market and captive coal sales; for 2001–2007, prices are for open market coal sales; for 2008 forward, prices are Iron ore and coking coal led the increase.
